WAG Registration
WAG (Writing And Grammar) was birthed out of a desire for my own early elementary Classical Homeschool Students to acquire a foundation in the GRAMMAR of Grammar and Writing!
As Classical students, we understand the natural way our brain is wired to learn. The great classical fathers, Aristotle and Socrates, knew that to learn anything new it’s best to follow the trivium (meaning ‘three roads’ in Latin.) The first ‘road’ or stage of learning anything (a stage that is natural for young learners especially) is the GRAMMAR stage. This is when we learn the vocabulary of a subject. Children start very young just learning to ‘name’ things. They learn new terms and definitions and become familiar with them through repetition, recitation, and memorization. Then as they reach the second stage, or DIALECTIC, of learning, they begin to understand how these terms and definitions work together and how things are used to produce an outcome. This naturally occurs around 4th grade though middle school which is when students learn to apply grammar and writing techniques at a simple level. Eventually, they progress to the RHETORIC stage and are able to create well-written essays that can ultimately be used to lead others to truth, beauty, or virtue with their words, whether written or spoken!

WAG is designed to introduce early elementary students K-3 to the terms and definitions of English grammar and writing. They will learn about nouns and verbs and adjectives, for example, and memorize their definitions. They will have opportunities through simple worksheets to identify these terms; however, the true goal is to memorize the terms so that around 4th or 5th grade they can begin applying them to various sentence structures and patterns in order to write more complex essays. In WAG, students will begin to understand how to read or listen to a simple source text and create a keyword outline to create their own version of the story or information (this begins the process of avoiding plagiarism and creating their own work in the upper grades!)
WAG is designed to be simple and fun. It is not loaded with overwhelming concepts that students are expected to understand and perform. It is meant to be fundamental memory work that they’ll build upon in upper elementary through high school. Each week's lesson is about 45 minutes long per subject (an hour and a half for both Grammar and Writing) and can be used for a one-day Co-op or broken into two or more days.

A Worksheet to practice grammar terms that are integrated with their writing vocabulary

A Handwriting sheet to practice writing and spelling those terms

A Song to help them learn that week's grammar definition

Games and songs to help review and memorize so that learning is engaging and fun
